COMMUNITY BASED PROJECTS
Under this, we undertake an array of projects and activities pursuant to our planned operational strategies/plans. All these are intended to respond to the needs of the less advantaged and needy groups in the rural communities around the park. Among others, we are now promoting the following projects;
The axis of our entire activities is Education. Education is a fundamental human right and a definitive basic aim in human development. It is understood to have a multiplier effect on other human rights such as; rights of health, freedom of expression, culture and work. In regions where needs are many and resources few, it is often those who are not vocal who are overlooked – by their neighbors and by their governments. In this regard, some people around the park experience these problems with education at their most extreme. They know well how dreadful it is to be illiterate.
Access to education is not just about whether it is possible to go to school but rather about whether education is appropriate, nurturing a community’s own sense of identity as well as encouraging a sense of belonging and integration on the wider local, national and international level.
We are supporting many of them in schools through provision of School fees where possible, scholastic materials, uniforms and alike.
At a basic level, we encourage the adults to be able to read and this will in the long run prevent them from being at the mercy of others by enabling them at least to read letters, signposts and notices on public boards. At a more complex level, the opportunity to support primary schools and secondary schools especially St. Joseph’s Secondary School which is adjacent to Nshongi Gorilla Resort is our priority. This without doubt will enhance their capability to protect their interests both on local and regional level in days to come.
HEALTH CARE SERVICES.
We are working hand in hand with Rubuguri Parish through Nkuringo Green Hill Health Centre III. In this facility, a wide range of services are offered. They include; immunization, Counseling especially to HIV/AIDS patients and Alcohol addicts, Antenatal services as well as conducting some workshops about fighting malnutrition, HIV/AIDS awareness programs, Family planning among others. Volunteers in this Health facility are always welcome meanwhile residing at Nshongi Gorilla Resort.
BEE KEEPING PROJECTS.
Bee keeping has been deemed as one of the favorable projects in this region given the favorable conditions around its vicinity. The great and vast forests around provides materials for making beehives. These very forests, act as habitats for the bees. The market for honey is rest assured as we have more than 3 honey processing plants in the region. At the moment we possess of 4 Bee projects with over 126 bee hives as we look on to other communities for similar projects.
ARTS AND CRAFTS MAKING
We promote creativity through Arts and Crafts making by the locals through which they earn some income. On the grounds behind the Nshongi Gorilla Resort is the Arts and Crafts gallery, where artwork and crafts from the locals are displayed and sold on.
PROMOTION OF CULITUAL GROUPS.
We promote culture of the indigenous people through encouraging formation of cultural groups. These groups perform different cultural activities like dancing and drama, entertainments to visitors and on other social gatherings. Through such they also earn a living. You wish to have a taste of their melodies and African strokes? Visit Nshongi Gorilla Resort!
Through our associates, we promote several poultry projects in different individual families and communities. From such projects, the beneficiaries not only harvest eggs for sale but also high quality manure which improve the yields in the gardens around their homes.
SHEEP AND GOAT REARING.
This is yet another project that we are promoting but still on a small scale due to limited funds to buy sheep and goats for each community or individual families. Our target is to see each family hopefully get their own sheep/goats from these being given out to the first recipients as this project works on a rotational basis.
Agriculture is one of the activities that form the back borne of the population in the region. Ours it to equip people with basic skills enough to boost their agricultural activities. We are doing it all in collaboration with other organizations like DIG International and individual volunteers from local and international communities. We all in all endeavor to give people basics and hints concerning modern farming through practical means.
For one to have a holistic and integral life there is an immense call for a greater understanding of God. As a matter of fact, there should be thoughtfulness of one’s self and neighbor. Thus in our endeavors, we strive toward greater personal relationship with God and neighbor, self discovery through imparting self-knowledge, self-understanding, growth and development, spiritual counseling among other spiritual activities. This will guarantee economic development, community and spiritual empowerment for the stakeholders in their respective communities thus an integral person.
Sitting on the terrace you can smell the sweet perfume of the honey suckle, while listening to the beautiful African night by the fire place. Cultural entertainment groups also make it during evening hours around the fire place.
